Questions about Gnomeregan

As far as my knowledge of Gnomeregan goes, I know that they poisoned the city with radiation to rid the place of troggs(ultimately killing more gnomes that troggs) But I have a few questions:
-How can Meknigeer Thermaplugg(spelling) still be alive? ive heard that he is inside Gnomeregan inside a gnomish battle suit but does this suit generate oxygen or purify the air?

-In one of the quests for Bael' Modan You have to retrieve the "Tears of the moon" and after you give it to the exiled dwarf, he turns into a trogg then dies. Does this mean that the Gnomes delved to deep in their mines and were turned into troggs? or that a group of ancient miners found the substance but were imprisoned in the mines, and the miners just released them?

Any insight would be appreciated.

The Troggs that the Gnomes dug up were already there.

Dwarves and Troggs are spawned from a common race.

the poison that killed most of the gnomes has kinda gone away now, though it has driven the lepergnomes insane already. also, I think Thermaplugg was affected at some point, since he is obviously insane...
