all right, I saw a boat in WoW that, on it's sails, had something akin to a unicorny symbol. what faction/group used that?

Most probably not...
Perhaps in Azeroth the Unicorn was just a mythological creature , just like in our world...

Is there a single myth in that universe that hasn't turned out to be true?

Actually, I think it's just a general rule for fiction stories that legends are always true.
As for the unicorn symbol, could it possibly be Dalaran? After all, archmages in War3 are supposed to ride on unicorns (although in game they always looked like plain horses to me). The problem with that would be that Dalaran's encased in a magic shield, but maybe they had to send some ship out as an emissary or something?
There are Zebras in the Barrens that have the single horn like Unicorns as seen in this screenshot (http://www.worldofwar.net/screenshots/index.php?type=&id=871)

Orc: Hi meet my cat, he's called Dave.
Somehow I find it funny.

Dalarn seems like a good bet, even though they switched the AMs to regular horses before RoC hit Beta.
And I too, like the big kitty.

The high elves in Warcraft 2 had unicorns on their sails so it's probably them.

the plot thickens... because I saw these sails on a boat in the Shimmering Flats. yes, thats a desert. must have been sea at some point though, dried up or something... very salty place. so they must have gone there before it dried up, perhaps a high elf military expedition to reclaim kalimdor?
naw.
Didn't archmagi ride on unicorns?

Why, though? It seems kind of pointless to bother removing a horn model from the archmage's horse... what was that supposed to accomplish?

Maybe during the polygon optimisation of W3 , Blizzard certainly wanted to gain the most performance possible in that department and along a lot of other poly deletion , they could have removed the few polys used by the horn.
Would have been interesting , to keep a relation with the unicorn emblem of the elven boats if they have kept the horn on the archmage horse

I get the reference, but what does it have to do with the discussion?

I guess that's the best explanation, but it's still kind of a disappointment. A little thing, I know, but it added flair.

After looking through the Art of Warcraft, I came to the conclusion that they probably wanted to do a more unique take on the unicorn. There's a sketch of a unicorn with a massive, curvy horn, not the small corkscrew horn you generally see. So maybe they took out the unicorn because they had bigger plans for it. I just wish they would've changed the manual profile, though, because it's rather glaring especially for those of us who followed the game since conception.
Also, unicorns tend to be a symbol of grace, beauty, elegance, and purity, and this may have been misplaced between the legs of an archmage. I still think that a unicorn would've made a cool mount for the Priestess of the Moon, but I've gotten rather attached to Frostsabres lately, so I don't know what I think anymore.

I think the unicorns of warcraft should be wild, feral beasts whos bodies are filled to the brim with dangerous magical energy.
Unicorns might be special mounts in WoW.
