I have no idea what's causing this; it just started the other day, and persists after a virus scan, and multiple restarts.

When I try to run The Frozen Throne, it takes an abnormally long time to start, and every time I try to load a map, it crashes back to the desktop about a fifth of the way through. If it matters, the exact error message I get is:

This application has encountered a critical error.

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Program c:\program files\warcraft iii\war3.exe
File: War3.mpq

Press OK to terminate the application

Anyone know what's going on? Or have any clues on how to fix it without reinstalling the program (again)? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the MPQ has took a hit on the head or something. Install a copy to a different directory, then copy over the old war3.mpq with the new one? Sorry, but MPQ damage is usually perma.

Damnit. Well, since I have no clue how to install just the MPQ, and have had bad experiences with changing default directories, it seems I'll be reinstalling the whole blasted thing. Again.

Problem solved, and I didn't even lose my saved games this time. Thanks Kalos.

Please disregard this thread, as its purpose is fulfilled.

Ok, the problem keeps happening, no matter how many times I reinstall, and no matter what maps or campaigns I play. Does anyone have any idea what could be repeatedly messing up my MPQ? I'm getting very tired of and frustrated with reinstalling both games every day or two.

EDIT: I just reinstalled again, and got the error message as soon as I tried to play a map. What the frell is going on here?!

Yeah he's right. The Memory error one means either your graphics card memory has gone bad, or your main ram it'self has gone faulty. It could just be one bad map that's trying to link into the MPQ and is altering it badly Remove all maps that were put on a week before this problem occured (and those after that point) that would eliminate the possiblility of a new map with bad programing screwing up the map.

Have you run disk defragger in a long time? That, if anything, would cause this. There's so many possible solutions, some very expensive, the source must be located before any money is spent trying to fix it. Try reinstaling and running nothing but the Blizzard maps. If it breaks then it's almost definently hardware issues.

It seems the last incident may have been caused by failing to reacquire the patch (I don't know how that could cause this, but I was able to play after patching).

And when did I mention anything about "can't read memory?"

I have no idea what a "disk defragger" is, or where to get one.

It's built into every copy of Windows. It stops files breaking down in little fragments and becomeing unusable. If you haven't ran it in years then it's probably going to take the poor thing hours. You'll find it at:

Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Defragmentor

There are no harmful side effects, in fact if you're never ran it your computer will probably go much faster after it's completed it's task. Ideally this should be done once every three months to keep your computer in peak condition. The longer the break between defragmentations, the longer it takes though. If it doesn't solve the problem, at least it'll be still worth the trouble.

Thank you very much. Can't run it at the moment as I'm about to leave for the weekend, but I'll do so as soon as I get back on Sunday.

Incidentally, the game is working fine for the moment.
