View Full Version : Warcraft Quiz : A Wizard's Challenge

15-10-04, 09:26 PM
This is a quiz with a little warcraft fiction mixed.Timeline is before wc3 no wars are on...

A Dalaran wizard by the name of Teiras Aiurwyn struck a fortune with his revolutionary protection scrolls which could be used by common villagers too.
As the philanthropist and scholar that he was he chose to spend his fortune by going around the villages of Lordaeron, quizing and rewarding the winner and thus promoting litracy and education.

His first question, which he asked in Andorhal.
"These are ten identical bags of silver coins, each bag has ten silver coins of 10 gm each, except one back in which all ten coins are hollowed and wiegh 9 gm each. You can use this wieghing machine once to measure wieght and find out which one is the faulty one. If you do get to keep the all the coins !"

RULES :
1. You can try each question only once.
2. When one question has been answered correctly and confirmed another question may be asked, but lets try to stick it with the storyline !
3. Try them and most importantly have fun! :bigclap:

P.S. Its little fanfic, little off topic and a but community, ididnt know where to post so posted it here.

Any answers ? :y-wink3:

Is this the infamous ignore of the regulars??
Please post on this, i tried hard to make a thread that made sum sense ( not like i pwnz j0o and stuff ) and thought it could be interesting.

Just make a guess, no one saying u should post right ans only! Be sponataneous!
Is this too tough?
lastly if no one wants to ans anything atleast tell me if it was a good try or why u didnt like it, or u just hate anything involving using your brain.
i seriously thought hard for this one, i may be a noob but please dont ignore me!!

Purplebeard

Just put 1 coin from the first bag on the machine, 2 from the second bag, 3 from the third etc.
Subtract the last digit of the weight from 10 and you have the answer (if the answer is 0 it's the 10th bag).

Aj Windshadow
17-10-04, 05:26 PM
Your answer seems right, I didnt get the subtract from the ten part. :bigclap: You got silver !!
Its if you get a defect of 9 gms its the ninth or a defect of 3gms then the third and so on...
I thought of many other puzzles but due to the amazing response i wont post them.
PS Thanx for saving me from a triple post ( yikes!! :scared: )

I like this thread too, but I didn't try to guess since I didn't have a follow up question thought up yet if I got it right. I'd like it if you continued the thread, AJ.

In Andorhal as denizens gathered and thought, suprisingly a purplebearded dwarf came with the solution. He misjudged a little, but since this was the first village Teiras Aiurwyn was more than satisfied to give him the bags of silver.
This strange looking dwarf had changed the perception of this wizard about dwarves.
He also noticed a warrior in shinning armour with the twinkle of wisdom in his eyes who chose not to participate but he left Teiras mesmerized.

The journey to Hearthglenn had began, of the many puzzles in his mind Tieras had chosen the one he would ask :
"Here, with me I have a flask of 8 ml filled with rejuvinating oil, i also have two other flasks namely a 5 ml and a 3 ml flask. I want to seperate the oil into these flasks so that i have two flasks containing 4 ml each. This will help me prepare a special potion which can rid you of diseases for a whole year! So test your knowledge and wisdom and gain the promise of helath !"

Note :
1. All flasks are irregular in shape so you can't even measure half approx.
2. When you pour oil from 8 ml flask to the 3 ml flask you transfer 3 ml and rest of the 5 ml stays in the 8 ml flask.
3. Also when you pour from a filled 3ml flask to an empty 5 ml flask you transfer all the 3 ml into the 5 ml flask.

4. For the sake of conveniance(sp?) write as:
| (8 ml flask) (5 ml flask) (3 ml flask)
Qty.|
8 0 0
5 0 3
5 3 0
and so on...

5. You are not absolutely reqiured to ask a question, I said if you want to ask, do it after someone has answered the previous one and try to merge it into the story.

A tricky one...
I came up with this:
800
350
323
620
602
152
143
440
It might not be the most effective way, but I think it's correct.
Someone else may the next question (assuming I'm right).

Aj Windshadow

Believe it or not i had the exact same answer ( might be a shorter way though !)

If anyone wants to give a shorter answer or any comments or even ask any question, go ahead.I will need some more feedback to proceed with the story !

Not many were interested in Teiras' challenge in Hearthglenn.Curiously enough though the same purplebearded dwarf had come up with the solution almost immediately."Was he following me ?Perhaps he was travelling the same way As me.."

Without a moments delay Teiras left for Strathalome continuing the task he had taken upon himself. On the road to as he readied his question his caravan was attacked by a group of three bandits, one climbed on and pushed Tieras on the ground. As Teiras stuggled to recover another one snatched his staff. In great fury Teiras lashed out his sword and chanting a verse unleashed a bolt of lightning on charging brigand. As he crashed onto a tree completey lifeless, the other two climbed and rode away on their horses.
Teiras though a scholar was a vengeful mage, casting a protective ward on his caravan, he galloped away on his horse, Phoenix The Second, on the trail of the brigands. His chase led him to the fortress of Mardenrad keep.
This was no town for scholars, battle hardened and war torn, he chose to ask a simpler question :

Aj Windshadow
20-10-04, 11:11 PM
"During the second great war, a meeting of eight of the Allaince leaders was called for the final strike at the Orcish Stronghold and The Dark Portal.
I was given the task of arranging the seats in such a way that no leader who has different opinions sits in the vicinity of each other.
Figure out the an arrangement which suits the situation and I'll reward you with an enchantment scroll for your weapons and armour."
'The need for the prized scroll should bring out he best in them' he thought to himself.

Rules :
1.The seating arrangement :
. _ _
_ _ _ _
. _ _

_ denotes a seat for one leader.

2.For conveniance take 1,2,3...8. as the eight leaders and 1 can't be next to 2, 2 can't be next to 3 or 1 and so on.
eg.
. 8 2
6 4 7 5
. 1 3
is wrong as 8 is next to seven.
Good luck !
PS sorry for posting in parts as i pressed enter by mistake, then it didnt let me edit!!

As Teiras Aiurwyn wanders aimlessly with Purplebeard, a local construction contractor walks up close. "Wise one," he shouts, "can you do me a favor?"

"Sure, what's the matter?"

"We are building an arcane tower right now and we decided that we need one extra worker. I found someone who could work for 7 days for 1 ounce of gold. However, this additional worker insisted that he receive each day's pay at the end of that day. I have only a bar of gold, which weighs 1 ounce exactly. The problem is that it can be cut to precision only at the local goblin shop. The goblins, as you know, are very strange. They would cut it for me 2 times for free and after that the cost is impossibly high. Can you figure out a way that I only cut the gold bar twice and still pay the worker everyday without overpaying or underpaying?" :y-huh:

Aj Windshadow
27-10-04, 10:54 PM
Hmm good one...are you sure you can cut it only twice?
I think with a cut two times you get at max 4 pieces but with 3 times cutting its too simple,I may be wrong, I'll give it a go later, also good to see people asking questions too. Thanx for not deviating the story! I'll have my question up by tommorow, sorry for the delay but my pc is F'ed up.

The contractor explains,"The goblin shop works as such you give them 1 gold bar and specs. They will return you 2 gold bars according to spec. Therefore you can have only 3 gold bars after 2 cuts."

What are specs. ?? :y-mm:
This is above me, either a trick question or involves something uncommon.
Care to explain the rules?

HolyCreep
28-10-04, 11:50 AM
spec = specification
You give a bar of gold to the goblin shop and specify: I want it cut into 1 piece of 1/2 and 1 piece of 1/2 (insert any fraction as long as the two add to 1). They will do it and that is counted as 1 cut. If you give them 2 bars and expect 4 smaller bars, that's counted as 2 cuts.

Microsoft, the largest Goblin cooperation in the alliance, has been known to ask logic questions when they hire new human wizards. This is one of them.

MrProAmerica
28-10-04, 01:28 PM
I admit, I had to think about that one for quite a while, but the answer is really simple. You just need to figure in the concept of "change". Thus, the first cut should be made 1/7 to 6/7. Then the 6/7 piece should be cut into 2/7 and 4/7.

On the first day you give the worker the 1/7 bar. On the second day, you give him the 2/7 bar and ask him to return the 1/7 bar. Day three you give him back the 1/7 bar so he retains 3/7. Day 4 you take them both away and give him the 4/7 piece. Day 5 he gets the additional 1/7 piece, day 6 you switch the 1/7 for the 2/7 piece and day 7 he gets the remaining 1/7 piece. There, all done.

Now, is AJ going to post his puzzle or should I come up with one of my own?

MrProAmerica
28-10-04, 01:43 PM
Ah, what the heck. Here's something that happened to Sylvanas Windrunner ages ago.

One fine day, Sylvanas wanted to consult the wise archmage of Lordaeron, Visni the Bright, how to cast a spell that would heal her pet lamb, which has been suffering from a strange disease lately - most likely enchanted by a demonic wizard.
Visni agreed to help her, but she would have to acquire a mystical stone, located somewhere on their homeworld, the terran-like, globe-shaped planet Stratos.
The archmage told Sylvanas that all he knew about the location of the stone is, that if you travelled 10 miles south from its location, then 10 miles east, then 10 miles north, you would arrive at the stone again.
Intrigued by the great ease of the puzzle, Sylvanas ran off to the north pole to find the mystical stone. However, the stone was nowhere to be seen. What did Sylvanas do wrong?

If I may be so bold, I for one have seen the stone and it's pretty damn huge. You really can't miss it so it's definitely nowhere near the northpole. If nobody comes close by tomorrow, I'll post where it is and leave you guys to figure out why it's there...

Mr.ProAmerica nice one I thought it had to do something with the way it is cut, damn, it was definately a good one. Great now I can't answer yours, I'm starting to feel pretty stupid now....
*Confidence of being extremly intelligent slowly vanishes away.*

Me big n strong ogre you be puny human....*farts*hahaha.

Is your question somehow related to Starcraft?? Or requires some other knowledge?
You said its on some other planet, then why does she go to the north pole?
If someone gives me the time I'll continue the story.

HolyCreep

If the point can be uniquely defined on a globe,
If there are no other references,
If the globe rotates and the motion is uniform,

Then it must be one of the following: Center of Globe, North Pole, South Pole (or East Pole, West Pole, if it is rotating the other way).

exarchofulthwe
29-10-04, 07:19 AM
Well, you can make a triangle with all the points at 90 degrees on a globe, and if it is like that, then it could be anywhere on the globe, minus within 10 miles of the South Pole... (because then you couldn't travel south, and then you wouldn't get to the point of start again.)

You enlightened me. But it is not a triangle (otherwise the north pole would be correct). It can be viewed as following:

You first travel south for 10 miles,
then you travel east for 10 miles and the trick is that you are so close to the south pole that you just traveled a whole circle in this 10 miles,
since your replacement in the 2nd journey is essentially 0, you just travel 10 miles to the north to reach the original position.

Assuming the globe is very very large, then it is almost flat everywhere, so the 10 mile ring is about 5/pi miles away from the south pole. The stone's position is on a ring that has a 10+5/pi = 11.59 miles radius and the center is the south pole.

exarchofulthwe

Aj Windshadow
29-10-04, 07:22 PM
Damn, creep beat me to it .... I finally had it coming, I thought 1) either you are at the north pole OR
2) Moving east is a circle which leads to zero displacement...
since 10miles= 2pi*r. So wherever the radius of the planet is 10+5/pi i.e. a ring of that radius may have the stone. Also note the radius is to be measured from the axis of the planet...
I guess Holycreep also got something similar but Creep, why does it have to be just from the south pole?
Also proamerica you said it is on Stratos or something. How did sylvanas get there and how in the world have you seen it??

MrProAmerica
31-10-04, 05:39 AM
How did I see it? Magic :y-thumbsu

But both of you are correct, it is somewhere on a circle close to the southe pole, actually about 13 miles north of the South Pole if the planet were earth. Nice job, both of you!

The radius of the search-ring can only be approximated. To get a precise value, we MUST know the radius of the globe. Since we don't know that and we can assume the globe is really huge, then the radius is approaching 10+5/pi in either your definition of center or mine.

To make the above assumption even close to be right, radius of globe must be at least hunderds times greater than 10 miles. If you traveled 10 miles in a circle, it got to be close either to the north pole or the south pole. Since you just traveled 10 miles from north to south, the smallest circle possible in the north hemishpere is close to 20*pi >> 10 miles. Thus making anywhere close to the north pole impossible.
