What's ramadan?
Bullroarer
16-10-04, 01:24 PM
From before the sun rises to until the sun sets a muslim abstains from water, food, sin and you cannot miss a single prayer of the five daily prayers, if any of this is breached then your fast is broken. People must eat before the sun rises to keep their fast. This is done every day for an intire lunar month. There is also the tarawih, the prayers after Isha, which can last several hours. Also no intercourse is allowed during this entire luner month, even after sunset.

Wow. Seems like some heavy stuff, I'm glad I'm not a Muslim. Or any religion, for that matter :y-thumbsu
Anyway, enough of my Atheist preachings. Back on topic:
What happens if you break your fast? Or any of the 5 pillars? Do you end up in hell or something?

ramadan is supposed to be the most sacred duty to a muslim iirc.

If I break my fast before sunset then I do not recieve the blessings from that fast. The five pillars are the duty of every muslim, what matters is that we try to do them. As for who goes to hell? It is written that Allah will judge that and no one can say whether or not a person shall go there or not. Humans do not have the right to say a person shall go to hell or person shall not. We believe only god has the right to judge that.
Even water? Wow, are you allowed to drink anything at all?
Nothing. Water may only be used to clean the mouth. You must drink before the sun rises.

I used to date a muslim girl and I even thought about converting (to marry her), and I did the Ramadan a couple of times, not too hard if you ask me.

I'd just need to readjust my sleep schedule and then not have a snack as soon as I get home, so it wouldn't be amazingly hard for me to do. Resisting urges isn't something I find common around here, which I guess is why I respect someone who could.

It was kinda a joke, to wonder if things like using computers during the day are ok and stuff.

Where I come from, almost every Muslim does it. I remember back in school, the teachers asked us non-muslims to drink water outside of the classroom so as to not distract/tempt our muslim classmates. It's a nice way of showing our respect for them.

It's a nice way of showing our respect for them. Well some muslims abuse that respect. WHen my father was teaching, he knew a hindu proffessor. The hindu teacher gave them ten minutes at sunset to break their fast and do the Iftar feast.(Oh and ten minutes is more than enough time) The students accused the teacher of being prejudiced and said that was not enough time. These types of muslims make me ill and angry. Ramadan is about treating others with respect and self improvement, not taking advantage of other's kindness and calling them prejudiced later on.

whenever I eat with muslims, I take care not to order anything with pork in it (or if its in a lunchroom at uni/school, I wait til theyre finished with their food). dont know if theyve ever noticed, but that kind of thing means alot to ME. if people abstained from bananas while eating with me, Id be alot happier.

think of a banana. break it down into concepts such as colour, smell, consistency. I hate em all.
This calls for a party.
From before the sun rises to until the sun sets a muslim abstains from water, food, sin and you cannot miss a single prayer of the five daily prayers
So it's okay to sin after sunset? Did I miss a memo or something?

No, that is not what it means. Merely if you do sin, then the blessings from your fasting of that day mean nothing.

First off blessings to you
So what happens if you have a physical condition that would make fasting (even for a day) negitive for your health? Is it simply that you don't get the blessings for this period. Or do you simply try your best with the other things? I ask this because my religion has a similar pratice and I can not really fast as it causes my acid reflex to act up. (meaning I get sick if I do not eat regularly)

Fasting is not required for the young, the poor, the elderly or the sick.

What happens to you if you fail?
I dont like institutionalized religion for these reasons
Religion should be personal, your relationship with God
If you believe Ramadan is important, but fail in it, then that in itself is great punishment
Does hell have to exist as a punishment for all religions (I dunno, maybe Isalm has one)? Isnt failing your creator enough? Like when I tell my friends doing some things would make my parents disappointed in me, and then they ask well if there's no punishment, then why bother....

What happens to you if you fail? Failure happens when you surrender. If you break your fast out of weakness, then you must try to make it up another day to repent. If you eat out of accident then it is forgiven. dunno, maybe Isalm has one)? Muslims call heaven, Jinnah and hell, Jahanna.
You post an interesting question, is punishment required, but I do not believe I am learned enough to answer.

personally I think the term hell has been blow out of porportion by those that are either to zealous or just don't know that much. My understanding (which I am postive varies from church to church) is that your most likely to go to purgatory and your time in purgatory is set by the amout of sin you commited in life. Your punishment is that you do not get to see the creator, other then that it is thought to a be a decent existance. Hell (from what I know) is more often and not reserved for rapists, killers, and the like. Though I hear people use the phrase-if you don't do this your going to hell-all the time....
I am not sure how Islam works but I am pretty sure (like bull said earlier) that the a person can not say if you do this you automatically go to hell. Thats not for humanity to decide, but that doesn't stop people from saying it anyway.
I know I do a few things in my own personal way, somewhat do to a few of my limitations though.

Those who take earthy benifits as greater than gods love and bounty go to Hell as I understand. Purgatory, if it exists, is somewhere all mortals would go to first, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Muslims call heaven, Jinnah and hell, Jahanna.
Those sound like names. Is there anyone there named Jinnah or Jahanna?

Wow, I'll give you ALOT of credit Bullroarer - Ramadan is TOUGH. I was a Buddhist monk for about a couple weeks, and thats nearly how the monks live every day. Huge breakfast, and then nothing but water and cheese for the rest of the day. Really weird O.o
Even with the cheese and water, I still could barely survive the week. But you now...nothing the entire day?! Thats intense.

I thought it was called Jahannum.
Is it true you are not even allowed to swallow saliva during these days?
Bullroarer

You can swallow your saliva. and some muslim do say Jahannum.
"Jahanam" is Malay for... hell.
Jahanam engkau! (Hell to you!)
Though not really referring to hell-hell, but rather swear word-hell.

Arabic copied and got copied a lot, spanish for example shares a LOT of words with classical arabic, while modern arabic uses a lot of english words.
i.e:
Jehan'nam is just Gehennes in arabic. I know it exists in french but dunno about english.

Lol, if he was... why would he only fast a single day each year? Seems a little... mild, to say the least. He probably does it out of respect, for both the religion and his ex-girlfriend. As he said, he almost converted at one point. Although I don't think conversion for the sake of love, and not for belief, is the way to go :g puzzled

Actually I'm an agnostic, I dont pretend there is no god, only no knowledge of it.
And I almost converted to Islam because at one point in my life, I thought it was the truth (wasnt born agnostic lol).
Btw I do one day of faste every year because it reminds me of all the poor in the world that cant eat (ramadan's official reason), its also some kind of personal ritual...
Crazy tho that out of religious belief a lot of smokers can stop puffing for days, while they cant stop for good. Saying that because I dont feel the need to smoke when fasting my single day, although I'm a mild smoker (1 cig per 2 hours avg) and is currently unable to stop.
