View Full Version : [FI] Webcomics- A subculture of fear and violence
Whee! Webcomics! Don't we all love them? So funny, so interesting, such consumers of our lives. They're like MMORPGs, except not interactive. Almost anyone, drawing skills aside, can start a webcomic, and thanks to the slobbering idiotic masses that flood the internet, it will thrive, despite the best wishes of mother nature! DOWN WITH WEBCOMICS!
Ok, now that I've repulsed our viewers/scared away civilians/made forummers think that I'm a ******, and random rant on webcomics aside, webcomics. They're great fun- it's like a comic book, except that you don't buy them and you can choose what you read, unlike with a comic book, where you buy the thing and then it sucks and you're stuck with it.
Many webcomics are professional-level strips, some might even be called plain-out comics or manga as the case may be. Some people spend hours of their lives reading webcomics. To what end? There are a variety of reasons. Some read them for entertainment. I guess it'd be fair to say the majority of webcomic readers do.
But some look for something else- some turn to webcomics as Piro from Megatokyo turns to girl's manga, for guidance in life. Some might use webcomics to drown out their sorrow. Some might study the art in webcomics so as to improve their own. Some look for the brilliant jokes, the subtly drama plots, that one cannot find in the shallow everyday American cartoon.
So, this thread's purpose is to discuss webcomics.
Do you read webcomics? If so, which ones? Why? What do you like about them? Just generally discuss them, or flame me for my opening paragraph. Or flame webcomics...Or rather, I won't encourage you to be banned. Just discuss, no flaming please.

I read warbucket and van von hunter
Do these qualify as web comics??
It's mainly fun cuz they deal with subjects you're familiar with, say manga or warcraft.
I'd prefer professional stuff like Dilbert, which is amazingly funny, but is adjusted more to the masses.
To the best of my knowledge, yes, those are.

Umm.. -Finds a list.- megatokyo, Errant Story, Exploitation Now, Bob and George, starr cross'd destiny, some random fan comics other places spread near and far.
I find webcomics to be very obsessive. I can spend hours upon hours without break reading them, destroying the capacity for my computer to gain any speed in anything else. It's a hobby.. a creepy, obsessive hobby.
Did I mention the obsession?

I agree, there are too many bad webcomics, and while some are good, like penny arcade ( www.penny-arcade.com ) and elf only inn can sometimes be (if it ever gets updated again >_<) There are bad ones, like D20 Warriors, where i've only read one that actually made me laugh, and the only commonly updated thing on it is the rant page, which constantly grows as the wanna-be-maddox (wanna-be a wanna-be?) keeps complaining about everything basically copied from maddox... Anyways, noone cares for my opinion, i'll ****...
*whistles innocently* I wonder how many will be drawn into the depths of evil soul consumption if I post this harmless looking link? (http://www.megatokyo.com)
I read this one (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=010302)
and occationally warbucket.

Web comics have never appealed to me. I prefer to read the rants of Maddox, look at Ralfwarg's picture or read CTM's posts if I want to laugh whilst on the internet.

I like webcomics, but the only ones that have been able to consistantly hold my attention are 8 bit Theatre and Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki. Alot of them either I can't remember where I saw them, or they have a very limited novelty to them (you can only read so much Purple Pussy before getting sick of the stupidity of it all). Also just about every sprite comic is total crap "OMG I l00x l!ke m3g4m4nz0rz0rz0rz!!!!1111ONE P4yp4l pzl!!!111"
damnit i thought flak had left for good awhile ago...anyway...
warbucket
penny-arcade
and most notably and recently homestarrunner.com, sb emails are so good
you know flak, if you really wanted to win fi with this thread, you could take a page out of novar's book and make a psuedo webcomic of this otf. he had alot of us in his avatar some time ago.
I've been back for a long time, Laff.
Anyhow, I'm planning on doing a webcomic in the near future so that might be good practice...I'll be sure to include classic stuff that I've heard about/experienced in the past of this forum. Such as the Corrupt Wish Game's ravaging of Innerfire... :y-evil:
And Strongbad's awesome.

homestar's okay... they use crap (the word) too much and rarely anything else...
whatever
Anyways, i used to do 8-bit-theater, black mages always pwn... but i stopped like... a year ago... >_<
I wish there was more elf-only-inn... That's a pretty good theme, and looks funny too
D20 warriors sucks
I highly suggest this awesome webcomic (http://sgvy.com). Updates rather infrequently, but it's some of the best.
Also, http://applegeeks.com (Applegeeks) is not just for Macers- PC freaks love it too!
VG cats is cool...as is Strongbad E-mails (Drag, it's not just 'crap'! Did you see the Japanese Cartoon? That's hilarious! And 'crap'-free.)
I like to say, HOLY CRAP!
And the first link I posted is...goooooold.

Or like...
Homestar: Hey strongbad, notice anything different?
Strongbad: you've broke into my house?
Homestar: i always do that...
Or...
Strongbad's anime: Whoa... Those last 300 handfuls of dirt did NOT taste so good! I will try another and hope it tastes better!
Also watch children's book and children's TV show... :D

I read force monkeys until it got cancelled. That made me sad.
Well, if I'm doing a webcomic about the OTF, it's gonna be computer drawn and generally crappy. But...
Any ideas for the first strip? I'm thinking Hiro coming along, looking at the OTF and thinking 'vulnerably weaklings' and then taking them over.
ArPharazon

Gu comics
WTF-comics
Questing Norrath
8-bit theater
The Order of the Stick
Bob and George + all sub- and fancomics
Errant story (popular, ain't it? I found it via a B&G banner... and I love it already. Any idea if the colored versions will ever be resumed?)
And sometimes Penny Arcade, whenever the WoW site links to it...
I love webcomics. These ones I check daily, even though I sometimes already know it'll be for nothing.... many have their standard update-days. I also belong to several forums associated with them, but not of all the comics.

I occasionally make sprite comics....poor psyguy went to hell, though...
Please note that this is not an attack on Hirohito. This is a (non)humorous webcomic. Enjoy. (http://img89.exs.cx/img89/1520/OTFPARTONE.jpg).

I want to be the moronic comic relief... How's... 'that's bumkin!' ???
Seriously though, that does sound cool, and i'll like it until it insults me...
Then i'll love it XD
Er, he's the black cat in the suit. You know, lawyer cat? With shades 'cuz he's cool.
Anyhow, I might put you in using your avatar to denote your presence...then again I might not.

Woah.
I just read 164 8-bit theatre comics. Starting right after I posted in this thread.
I really should have something better to do, but I don't.

that web comic sucked flick, mine was much better.
See? t3h obsession gets all eventually. Within the next twenty four hour period you will have read all 620 strips (including the shirt guy dom strips, which take several minutes to read since they're sloppy and suck) of Megatokyo. It will happen.
Strip 2 of 'The Chaos of the OTF' will be coming out tomorrow. It concerns the posting of the ten commandments.
Who's Flick?

Megatokyo was great. Until Largo quit. Now? It's still good, but it's been slipping a bit. But that's just my opinion.
RPG World? A pretty good parody.
Kid Radd? (http://www.kidradd.com) What's this? A sprite comic with a plot? YES. It takes a little while to get rolling, in order to explain the physics of the world inside of the Kid Radd game, and how the player affects the world- pretty standard fare. But what happens when a game gets turned into a ROM...?
8-Bit Theater? YES. It also takes a little while to get rolling (as Clevinger finds his pace and refines his humor), but its humor has remained consistently sharp and funny for an abnormally long time.
VG Cats? Funny and wrong at the same time.
Penny-Arcade? Hit or miss. Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it's just... bizarre.
And that's all I have time to comment on.

There are very few web comics that are actually good. By good, I mean they have to have good artwork, good plotting ect. ect. Even people like Gonterman have fans.

Does studio Rains work qualify as web-comics?
Guess not, since it isnt a weekly update or so...
I dont really read those, only a little of a danish one called wulffmorgenthaler or something. The names comes from the creators, Michael Wulff and xxx Morgenthaler.
I saw a strip from Megatokyo once... But now i've got a bunch to get going!
