Long time ago someone posted on the community forum the URL of a christian website with numerous games reviews, which ended to be extremely funny due to the inconscious zealotry of the reviewers, who said why Warcraft was dangerous and blasphemous....

Anyone know the URL?? I really want to read their "Dawn of War" review!! :g laugh:

I am not sure if that would be accurate though I know you focus this on people of similar mind-set

anyway I find it rather amusing/annoying. I find there opinions amusing but find it annoying that I am technically assosiated with them. I find there concern with games using "black magic" or other such things to be rather annoying. Its called a game...

then there was this review http://www.almenconi.com/topics/games/pokemon.html

how in all that is right and good can you call pokemon evil?

I've been reading the website over the past two hours. Nio, I certainly hope for your sake that your beliefs are not as strong as the opinions the president of this zealot group is shoving down the throats of readers, as it would seem creativity is almost discouraged, in terms of the gaming industry.

It truly disgusts me to see what this man has to say. Every single thing is seen as wrong, and if you like any aspect of modern society it seems like you're on your way to Hell.

What upset me most was the fact that the review of The Sims - Bustin' Out had its rating lowered due to the fact that homosexuality was seen as perfectly fine.

I am seriously gonna e-mail this guy and complain.

These ppl are just WAY to strict. The point of a game is to entertain not teach children to be evil and w/e. I strongly doubt children that play WCIII will start practicing magic and start killing each other with swords.

Although I do have to agree with a few of their points. I dont think WCIII is very...good. They could lose the slut-wear clothing for the archers, hipp archers, and sorcs, cussing, and immense amounts of blood. But then again this is why its rated T not E.

Hahahahah, I love this:
6. EVERY mass murderer in the past five years under the age of 21 was deeply involved with playing first person shooter games – including the recent DC sniper! EVERY ONE! I’m not saying that playing these games made them kill, but the evidence shows that there may be a direct relationship.
I'll make my own:

6. EVERY mass murderer in the past five years under the age of 21 had eaten fast food at some point in their lives - including the recent DC sniper. EVERY ONE! I'm not saying that eating fast food made them kill, but the evidence clearly shows that there may be a direct relationship.

18. Since we believe the Bible, we know that there are only two spiritual entities: the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ and evil spirits....life only gives you two choices. Either you are worshipping the God of All or you are worshipping the god of this age (Satan). In reality you only have one choice. If you don’t chose to follow Jesus Christ, that in itself is the choice to follow Satan. How cute. Its times like these that I think about all the things I have to live for and get a warm smooshy feeling from knowing that people really do care.

About this kind of idea--

The problem isn't having strong beliefs, it's having bad beliefs. Frankly, if everyone strongly believed that Cristianity as about love and redemption (which it is), that all races are equal (which they are), that virtue and honor are the most important things in life (which they are), that certain depictions of potentially harmful content in video games may actually be beneficial depending upon presentation and context (also true), etc., the world would be a much better place. It's what you believe, not "zealotry" that has a beneficial or baneful influence on the world.

Wow. I'd much rather live in the world I live in then a world dominated by the belief of a divine entity that has no proof of existance.

1) Why do ask me if I'm saying something that I clearly didn't say? I said:

--Christianity is about love and redemption
--All races are equal
--Virtue and Honor are the most important things in life
--Depictions of potentially harmful things in video games may actually be beneficial depending upon context and presentation
--It would be good if everyone strongly believed the above four things

I sure don't see any mention of homosexuality in there, nor anything about routines.

2) Do you really think that morality is the only subject that distinguishes you from other people? Frankly, if everyone believed that all races are equal, murder and **** are wrong, child abuse is wrong, etc., the world would be better, and people could still be individuals. It's not like your personality is solely defined by your moral beliefs.

3) My point was that people mistake having strong beliefs (which in itself is neutral) with having bad beliefs. It's a common mistake.

Kingcrazygenius
11-10-04, 05:04 PM

Then what beliefs are you saying these people have? Strong and good beliefs?

The reason I brought up the other points was because those were some of the opinions of this group of "strong believers".

Which people? The people on the website, or the hypothetical people who believe the things I mentioned?

My point was that it's not being a "strong believer" that's a problem. It's not that the more strongly you believe in Christianity the more you think things like "Depictions of violence in games are always necessarily bad" or "Harry Potter encourages demon worship", it's that that's one kind of interpretation of Christianity that differs from others. But someone who did not believe such things might believe in Christianity just as strongly as someone else. So here's the idea:

Christian A: Thinks Christianity is about love and redemption, also thinks the Bible implies that video game violence is always corrupting.

Christian B: Thinks Christianity is about love and redemption, but also thinks that video game violence is not necessarily harmful, or possibly even beneficial, depending on context, etc.

Both A and B may have the same level of strength of their beliefs. Where they differ is in the content of those beliefs. (I'd also say that Christian B's belief is better, but that's beside this point).

So the point is that what you believe has nothing to do with how strongly you believe it.

A-Thousand-Lies

I'm personally a scientologist (is that what people are called when they believe only in science?), but I believe religion is an extremely important factor in society, especially with all the problems the world has today.

Religion is something to turn to in dark hours, something to hold spirits high while hope is low. I find that some have lost their way in the present day, but most are just believing in something. Isn't that what everyone does at some point? Remember the days of Santa Clause, and the Easter Bunny? Even the Tooth Fairy was something important to our lives.

Yes, some do go door to door to get more people do believe in their religion, but that is only in good heart. Their belief (I think) is that you must worship God in order to be in salvation, and they are only trying to help you.

I don't see why you say that preachers "force their beliefs on others", though--in most cases, people hear preachers when they themselves voluntarily go to church and listen to one. If you mean people who go preach on the streets or those who talk to people door-to-door, etc., there are some good and some bad. If someone harasses you, then that's not a good thing. But if someone merely asks if they can talk to you, or offers to give you a pamphlet or whatever, there's nothing wrong with that.

True story: One day when I was in high school, a friend of mine was over at my house, and three Mormon people approached us. Although we told them that we weren't interested in hearing about Mormonism, we were nice to them, and ended up playing basketball with them for about an hour or so. Did they convert us, or even really talk to us very much about Mormonism? No, because we politely said we weren't interested. Did we get angry at them for "harassing" us and trying to "force beliefs down our throats?" No, because they weren't doing that. What we did do was have a good time with some friendly people who were trying to do what they thought was right. Sure, there are some very vocal, overbearing types who actually do harass people in the name of religion. But it's unfortunate that on the basis of that minority, people tend to stereotype religious people (especially certain ones, like Mormons) as being that way.

I'm personally a scientologist (is that what people are called when they believe only in science?), but I believe religion is an extremely important factor in society, especially with all the problems the world has today.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that "Scientology" is itself a kind of religion, and doesn't just refer to believing in science. So if you believe only in science, I think you'd be described as something else, not a "scientologist".

Now, a little nitpicky thing: It's "Santa Claus", not "Clause". (Coincidentally enough, lately I've had to read a number of things that all contained that exact mistake, which is why it's sort of on my mind right now.)

Well, of the preachers myself and friends/family of mine have encountered tend to be those who force their opinions down others' throats. Perhaps I have only met and heard of the bad bunch of the preachers, but they often tend to not let you go and try to convert you to their religion. In my opinion, no matter what religion is, not taking the hint that one is not interested yet still persisting is being rude and generally stupid.

They also tend to say everything that should be done, everything to be done righteously but when it comes to doing it themselves they never practice what they preach esp. in case of christianity.( as far as ive known )

Anyways that site though goes too far it is not for us , its for people as much into it as him and he clearly says that too so he's right about gamers so much into the game
they take his reviews as a personal attack and send hatemail.

It is right in some aspects and definately influenced by Biblical stuff.
I mean a scientist recomending games would give something that brings the mind into play more pts. than a fps with meaning less killing and so on...
As a parent no one will want children to play sick games ( u know which ones )
or become goth and use drugs and follow bands like KISS and stuff.

They are in some ways living in the dark ages however .They also lack tolerance. How can they say all other religions are just manipulated by satan ,it may be the reverse for all they know...

Basically let them be. Its their life let them live it the way they want to.

Note I just gave a different pt. of view to them personally they didn't affect me,
there are many different people in the world. They may seem wierd to us and we to them but we all can try to be tolerant towards each other.

Yes, I'm sure that's true--and I can tell you why, too. You are an atheist, correct? And from what you say, it sounds like most of your family and friends are as well. That means that you wouldn't encounter preachers in the usual setting--a church--because you don't go to church. Furthermore, you wouldn't be inclined to listen to a preacher on the street on purpose, and if you happened to pass one, you would most likely just pass them by, and say that you weren't interested if they did try to talk to you. So, the only preachers that you would ever end up talking to are the ones who are pushy enough to try to get in your face and not leave you alone, and from that unrepresentative sample, you base your assessment of preachers in general. Thus the view that preachers in general are like that is the result of a simple but common statistical error.

Very well, I retract my earlier statement. Not all preachers try and force their opinions on you.

If you buy into the premise that it is the human’s manifest destiny to control the universe, then it is okay to slaughter the aliens who oppose you. If, however, you believe in the aliens right to defend their homelands, the humans are the aggressors. In that case this game is teaching a very harmful attitude.
What do they think of the Americans of the past couple centuries? They thought this exact same thing.

kinda like infidel and samaritian(sp)
Actually, Samaritans lived outside of Biblical Israel and were looked down upon because they weren't Jewish.

I'm a Christian, and I agree with some of the stuff he says, but not most of it. I played Diablo (and beat it in less than 100 hours) and obviously Warcraft III. I don't see anything bad about Warcraft.
Anyway, what's the point of believing something if you don't stand up for it? That's all this guy's doing. sure, he may be a little closed-minded, but he's standing up for his beliefs and doing something (or at least trying) about them. Even if you disagree, that's more than a lot of us are doing.
