Vinny the Shark

The hum of the band playing in the background made all the customers come alive. The lights of the casino added to the display and splendor. Everything was wild and untamed. It was probably one of the few times that Vinny had any fun. He was dressed in his nice swade shoes and suit. As usual there was beautiful woman in a red dress dancing with him at the center of the chaos. The moved and swayed like fire itself. Dancing was one of the few things that took Vinny away from his day job.

Then the telephone rang inside his pockets. The customers all froze and with a single twitch of Vinny's finger, they all left. Vinny hated his job, but he was trapped within it. His job was his survival and the survival of his family. He listened to one of his informants telling him how a vampire official had just used a human for a cult saccrifice. In the world where Vinny lived, everything was run by magical beings such as werewolves, wizards, faries, gargoyles, sorcerors, druids and other such beings. The human race had found magic and most had chosen to evolve into such beings. Sometimes Vinny wondered why his ancestors chose not evolve or interbreed.

Human killings were completly ignored by the police. Vinny couldn't really blame them. After all, humanity's only purpose was to be laborers and second-class citizens. He listened to his informant talking about how the human had been slaughtered. Vinny gave his orders and the deed was done. Vinny knew that by tommorow morning there would be a dead vampire somewhere in a dumpster. He kept himself cold and try to forget his emotions. He kept himself this way to make sure he did not cry, for if he started, he would never stop. He had power, influence, connections and wealth. If one were to add all of this with Vinny's merciless attitude, then one would understand why he was called Vinny the Shark. He was the only power that kept humans safe. He did what he had to simply to make sure other humans were safe.

Vinny liked the nickname. As time progressed, he began to imagine he was a shark. In no time at all, he began stealing DNA samples from the ancient planet of earth. He would clone sharks for his underground aquarium, a place only Vinny and a few others have ever seen. There Vinny would walk around and wonder what it would be like to be a shark. He had wanted to be a marine biologist, but alas humans were not good enough to keep up with mermen or murlocs.

As Vinny walked into his cold and lonely room, he began to take ease. He took off his tie and suit. Then he dressed for bed and fell asleep. In his sleep he would dream of a young boy named Vindel. A young boy who had a mother and father. A boy who dreamed of becoming a submarine explorer. Vinny dreamed of the boy he had once been. He dreamed of the mother he once had. In his dreams, Vinny found peace.

The red sun of the planet Faria set in the evening sky. Underneath cloudless blood red canopies was the miserable hobble of Ratmanure Village. The name was just, for Ratmanure was home to an array of thieves, witches, prostitutes, murderers & other vagabond trash. This was the very gutter of Faria. One could see a vampire stealing blood from the blood bank & a snake woman selling her body to a stranger a block away.

On the roof of one of the buildings sat a human boy. Humans were rare upon Faria. The ancient race had evolved into other things. The remaining humans had been reduced to labor workers. However, this human was dressed in clothes from out of the history books of ancient earth. He wore dress shoes of black, a sign of wealth. There were also some brown khakis pants. There was no shirt, but a simple black vest. His skin was a gentle brown and his hair was raven, cut to a military style. He had a very lanky build, but his arms were thick with muscles and vessels. Perhaps his most distinguishing feature were his raging black eyes.

His name was Jared, the son of a sorcerer and a fairy royal. By some freak accident Jared inherited neither of their magical characteristics, but his sister had both. She had her mother’s ability to fly, throw balls of fire, drain life energy & move things with her mind. She also had her father’s ability to breathe flames, control tides, create illusions and caste spells. Ever since he was young, his parents loved her so much. They ignored him and left him in her shadow. He spent his time in Ratmanure to get away from them. There he would train his body everyday to remove the pain from his heart.

He noticed a bright light descending from the heavens. It made him slightly annoyed. As the light came down, all the denizens of Ratmanure, scurried into the holes. A woman appeared within the glowing orb. She had flowing black hair. A slightly lighter brown skin tone than Jared graced her body. Her eyes were an almost emerald green. Of course her entire body was incased in hard steel armor. Jared grunted, “Hello sis. What brings you to the hell hole?

She was a bit annoyed, since Jared was 19, a year older than her. She puffed up her chest like the stuffy school teachers at her academy. “I would prefer you not come to this place. There are many beings, which would take advantage of your handicap.”

“Whatever.” Jared rolled his eyes, a bit insulted because she pointed out he was magically disabled. He shrugged off the comment quickly and went back to brooding.

“I only came here to invite you to my graduation ceremony tomorrow. It would man much to have you there.” She said honestly. Jared contemplated the words. His sister had looked up to him. He knew that tomorrow he would be free. He simply nodded his head and she flew away. He kept his jealousy well hidden.

The next day Jared was up and moving through the bustling city of Hiron. It was a metropolis of winged men, flying broomsticks and cybernetic magicians. Everyone was flying, except Jared. He wanted to be a bit late just spite his sister, so he skipped the bus ride. All around him people were rushing to the Military Academy for the graduation ceremony. Jared snorted at the spectacle and trudged on even slower. He began wondering the face on that spoiled brat of a sister when he would come an hour late.

When Jared entered the building, he found things not as crowded one would expect. The halls filled with golden chandeliers and silver chairs ware surprisingly empty. He hurried through the rooms, but ultimately found nothing. As he sat down to think, a sound penetrated his ear. The hum of a camera was very close to him. In all the hurry someone must have dropped their machine. He picked up the device and played back the event. Within the machine he could see an assortment of magical beings and a couple of human butlers. He saw his sister scared upon a stage. He felt a sharp stab of guilt, which is rare for someone as cold hearted has Jared. He continued to watch with boredom, until people started vanish. There was no portal or sign of teleportation. One minute they were there and the next, they were simply gone.

The whole planet was buzzing with the news of the missing warriors and wizards. Everyone was completely horrified and in fear of some sort of alien invasion. The local police as well as the Planetary Investigation Council, (PIC), had assured citizens of Faria that nothing extreme had really happened. They swore they would do everything to get back all those that had vanished.

Jared slowly approached the PIC agent, a tree sprite. He had a very serious look upon his face and a bit of anger mixed in. He was dressed in clothing made completely out of leaves and small branches grew out of his head. Jared took a daring step forward. “Please, I need your help. I believe I can help you find the missing people. I have a recording.”

“The Planetary Investigation Council has no time for human jokes. Please leave the crime site before you are taken into custody.” The wood sprite turned away. This was not the first time Jared had been ignored for being human. He simply couldn’t believe he was ignored so easily when he held evidence in his hands. Anti magically disabled discrimination may have been illegal by law, but it was practiced every day. Cursing under his breath, Jared left. There was only one person the planet that could help him save his sister, Vinny The Shark.

The casino was alive with many spectators. They all moved with the sound of ringing bells and crazy music. It was thriving with a great number of humans and was probably the only place in the world where humans could be in peace. This place was run by the infamous mafia boss named Vinny the Shark. Vinny did things that were illegal and could easily get away with it. He did for the benefit of the last vestiges of the human minority. Jared had grown close to Vinny and sort of knew the man behind the name. The two had been friends since Jared had accidentally stumbled onto a gang of thugs in Ratmanure. Vinny had stopped the bullies before Jared had become soup.

Jared couldn’t trust the PIC, the local police or his parents, but he could trust Vinny. The man had a short stature, but he had a fearsome look in his eyes. If a man were to look at Vinny, they could see something dangerous just waiting to come out. As always he was on the middle of the dance floor having a drink with a lady in a red dress while a jazz band was playing a song. Ever since the people of earth had left and come to Faria, jazz had died out. Vinny was making sure the style would come back.

“Jared, what’s up hot head?” Vinny asked quite politely. It was Vinny’s nickname for Jared. Vinny was probably the only creature that could make Jared laugh. Unlike Jared who was always tense and ready to rumble, Vinny was always making jokes. His humorous nature was very good at hiding the deadliness of Vinny’s mind. Jared may have been one of the toughest street fighters in Ratmanure, but even knew when not to cross Vinny.

“Vinny, you heard the news?” Jared asked. Vinny just took his glass and slightly nodded. Jared became slightly uncomfortable as Vinny narrowed his eyes. Jared could tell Vinny was thinking something.

“I need your help to find my sister. You have connections everywhere, Vinny. I know that you know a person who knows what happened.” Jared stood firm. Vinny, a many of thirty two slightly nodded. He snapped his fingers and the band stopped playing. As soon as the band stopped playing, all the customers froze. With a simple glance from Vinny, everyone left the room.

Vinny waited until he and Jared were alone, then he spoke, “As much as I hate the way magical beings treat human beings, I am willing to help you this time. Your right, I do know a person who knows what happened to your sister. His name his Slag. The guy is a real bum, but word is he joined some sort of a cult that sucks the powers from magical beings and uses it for their own purposes. I fight for human rights, but these stunads go too far. I hear they murdered an entire family of fairies because one of them disrespected a human servant.”

“Thank you Vinny. I promise to pay you back as soon as I can.” Jared clasped Vinny’s hand.

“Not so fast. You don’t have to pay me. I am going to help you find your sister myself. It’s about time I did something without sending my goons to do my work. Besides, you’re going to need my help taking this ugly mook down.” Vinny laughed playfully. Jared was slightly insulted by this comment.

“Are you saying I can’t beat him by myself?” Jared growled.

“No, I am saying that I know you better than you think. Oh you say you hate your sister, but I know deep inside you love that girl. I remember when you were fourteen and I saw you buy a present for her. You don’t want to admit it to anyone, but you love her. Love is no good on the street Jared. You got to let your brain do the thinking and not your brotherly instincts out there. You’re going to be off your game. Besides, you may be a tough brawler, but Slag needs something different. You need to do things to get your sister back. You need to do terrible things. Things I know you don’t got the heart to do. So tell me are you willing to do anything to get your sister back. If you don’t, then there is no point of me helping you.” Vinny’s smile became hard and his voice had become emotionless.

“Yes I am.” Jared said stoutly, but it was a lie. He was not quite sure if he was ready.

Slag was a very brawny human being. He probably stood nearly seven feet tall. His stature was very intimidating and his hair had two curls, which made him look like a devil. He wore a t-**** with the logo human power written on it. Above the logo was a fist crushing a magic wand in its grip. Vinny and Jared had to wait for the right opportunity for the ambush.

As soon as Slag came in their direction, Vinny fired the tranquilizer dart from his rifle. The big man saw the needle sticking out of his shoulder. Slag’s eyes were filled with rage and Jared was a bit disgusted by the scene. Jared preferred bashing things in with his hands rather than ambushing a man with a tranquilizer dart. The big city underworld was different from Ratmanure. In Ratmanure all the crimes were small and done in broad daylight. The city was only this way at night and the stakes were so much higher. Jared kept his mouth shut, so he wouldn’t disrespect Vinny.

“I know what you’re thinking.” Vinny laughed as Slag stumbled and collapsed in a sleep, “Street rules in Ratmanure say you have to fight a man face to face. Street rules there are not like street rules here. We do things a bit differently in the big city. You want to fight, you go to fight dirty.”

“Are we done?” Jared said quietly.

“We have not even begun.” Vinny answered the bewildered youth. Jared had always considered himself a very hardcore person, but when he looked at those mad eyes in Vinny’s eyes, he understood what hard core really meant.

“I will die in the name of Humanity. We are the chosen people of universe. Our genes are not tampered and we refuse the rot of magic. You two are both blind. You are nothing, but slaves to these magical beings…” Slag began raving about the power of his faith. Some of the words actually surprised Jared. He never knew a creature could be so brainwashed. Vinny merely looked at the being coldly. Vinny’s silence must have made Slag want to tear the chains apart. There was only one lamp hanging from above in the small dark room. The only other objects were a metallic bat near Vinny and a lie detector machine strapped to Slag.

“Jared, I want you to look away.” Vinny snapped his fingers. The man slowly picked an aluminum bat off the floor. Jared had often beaten men while they were knocked down after a fight, but he had never used a weapon against a person who was tied up.

“Vinny you can’t” Jared spoke aloud and Vinny swiveled his head angrily. Jared knew he should have just kept his mouth shut.

“Jared, to beat the monster, you sometimes have to be the monster. If you want survive this place and save your sister then you may have to make the same choice.” Vinny said with a callous mouth. Jared just stood by and watched as Vinny began torturing the helpless fanatic. The screams scared and shocked Jared, but he stood there in silence. For hours he watched until they finally got an answer.

“Jared, are you sure you want to do this?” Vinny asked with genuine concern. Jared nodded. The only way to get his sister back would be through blood. Slag had told them how the cult had trapped the souls of the people from the academy within the heart of their leader. The only way to release all the souls would be stab the leader within the heart. Jared had never killed anyone before, but he knew he had to save his sister. After all the times he bragged that he could kill someone without feeling anything, now fate would put his bragging to the test. Jared had never felt so scared in his life. Vinny had offered to do it for him, but Jared declined. This fight would be Jared’s alone.

Jared walked up to the man named Michael Findarin. He was the secret leader of the Human Rebellion, the organization that kidnapped Jared’s sister. Michael seemed like an ordinary man. He was a small man with glasses and an orange shirt. He wore a pair of khakis shorts and he wore rubber sandals on his feet. Michael only got one look at Jared. Jared saw the eyes, which were so alive, like his own. Jared looked into the eyes of the man he would kill. The night was dark and no one could see them. Jared felt a tinge of guilt, but he knew what he had to do. He remembered what Vinny said about having to become a monster. He gripped the knife and stabbed it into the small man’s heart. The metal made no sound as it went into the ribcage. Michael was in so much pain, that he could not even speak words. He looked at Jared as if to ask why. Jared turned away and waited. A brilliant flash of light appeared and Jared knew all the victims had been returned home. Jared didn’t care, all he saw was the blood on his hands and the dead man lying beside him.
